Go-like simplicism seems to be the philosophy that prevails in the domain of digital live controllers. anyhow...

mlrv:
...works on grid-based music contollers like the monome, livid ohm/block, novation launchpad, and akai apc/mpd. the software allows a sound file or live recording to resources be mapped across each row and assigned a triggering behavior.
Within this simple set of constraints and a complete MIDI + OSC remote control system, the performer of electronic music can be freed from the laptop, and at the very least appear to be doing something interesting.

Since the Team at Video Lan Project is nearing the release of version 1.0.0 of their famous VLC media player, also my personal choice of media player, I figured I spread the word and make you aware that there is a Skin contest going on right now for the final release too. As for this release candidate, it contains lots of new features like new codecs, various playback core improvements (frame-by-frame, live-recording, instant pausing, etc...), interface improvements and many bugfixes. Get more info, binaries and Web-site skin editors at the project site. Contribute by testing this wonderful piece of software. Keep software free!

Oh what a great week this was for us tech aficionados!

First off, the Nintendo DSi is out since yesterday in Europe, with 2 cams integrated (waitin for homebrew! yay!), bigger screens and slimmer design... check it out.

Secondly, Ableton Live 8 (Kompact's most trusted choice for sequencing and live performance) is finally out with tons of new features like thight Max/MSP integration, Live Set sharing, new warping methods and lots of other stuff... more info here.

this thread is supposed to give you some information about the possibilities to create music on the nintendoDS. as far as it comes to home-brewed applications you will need a ds card adapter like Edge, R4, CycloDS, ect.
here we go:

GlitchDS (homebrew, free)
Cellular Automaton music sequence with a really nice minimalist interface. you can load your own sounds in .raw format and it also has a visualization feature for the sound created, 8bit - style of course. ideal for IDM and noisy sounds.

RepeaterDS (homebrew, free)
repeaterDS is a free music application for the Nintendo DS that allows you to “play” a sample by drawing on the DS screen. The vertical axis controls repeat length. The horizontal axis controls the playback offset into where to buy watches replicas the sample.

: Songbird 1.0 Interface

Songbird, the open source cross-platform media player, is now available in the 1.0 version with tons of features and available addons.

I've been watching the development of Songbird since it was first announced and installed it every once in a while, but it never was stable enough to keep it as my default media player.

But with yesterdays official release this has changed. I've been testing it throughout the last 2 days an I'm really pleased with its performance and features.

The only downside methods is that it is still missing my most wanted feature for a media player: "Watch Folders" (automatic scans of your mp3 folder for updates and adding those to your library), but this is scheduled on the roadmap for february next year. I guess I can wait another 3 months for that feature.

So if you're sick and tired of the restrictions of iTunes you might consider to give the bird a try!!!

After previous 162 releases in the last 7 years the Processing team now finally releases Processing 1.0.

If you have never heard of Processing here is a short quote from their website:

TAL DUB II RELEASED

As of July 31st, Swiss software engineer and musician Patrick Kunz has released version II of his incredible sounding and FREE vintage dub delay VST plugin TAL DUB. Here are some specs taken from his site:

Synced delay times (1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1/1, 2/1 and trippled and dotted notes).
4x oversampled distortion stage.
VU-Meter shows gain reduction.
LFO (low pass cutoff and delay modulation, stereo width).
6dB resonance low pass filter.
3dB high pass filter.
