I can't f'in' believe this! Well, it honestly caught me by surprise now: With their last album, FUN DMC, being one of my personal favorites from '08, People Under The Stairs, after their short stopover at Tres Records and GoldDust, are back at OM records (that's where it all started back in '98) with their 7th album called Carried Away due to be released on October 13th already! The speed at which the two have been consistently putting out quality releases over the last few years is just unbelievable and I don't even have to prelisten to this one to know it will rock hard. It might just be a good idea to be prepared for some new styles. The official press release states that the album will be a mix of "1 part(y) Beastie Boys / 1 part Public Enemy and 1 part Radiohead", Thes One himself just says: "... some people who have heard it are saying candidate for one of the best puts albums... or so i hear." I just say: Anticipation!

Still supporting the vinyl lovers out there, this album comes as a special double LP pressing with a pimped up die-cut (the holes you can see in the pic are cut out, much like Hocus Pocus' Place 54 vinyl release...) laminate gatefold cover, a poster and boardgame and two full length bonus tracks. If you preorder via HHV.de you even get a T-shirt to go with it.

Plus: Watch out for another World Tour coming your way, dates will follow...

Thank you Thes One and Double K for making my day... again!

...that's why I don't want to keep this gem from you:

Kid Koala is back with a new project called The Slew, which features 6 turntables, DJ P-Love and Kid Koala himself. There will be a tour in the U.S. and an accompanying album that goes by the name of 100% which is available for free download. It's rockin' from what I've heard up until now! Kid Koala sez: "Music is meant to be heard..." I concur. Nuff said. Get it here and pass it on.

This release will also come out on CD and 2xLP for those who really dig it and there's even a fresh video out called It's all over, check it:

Peace.

It has been a long time, since i dropped the last MIXTAPE. but it has been a busy time too with all kinds of stuff. however, i was diggin in my crates yesterday night and it seems like i got hooked by the late 90ties again. althought i made a little excursion to the present time too.

I tried to pick some "forgotten" vinyl goodies starting with Mass Influence (that might have been one of the most underrated Hip Hop acts ever aswell as Darc Mind who's finished album "Symtomatic Of A Greater Ill" was just not released by Loud Records after the 12inch debut dopeness "Outside Looking In" in 1996. (sorry, this had to be said again. by the way: Anticon did: 10 years later. you can find some tracks on former mixtapes). Heltah Skeltah, Persevere, Lateef, Homeless Derilex, Biggie (i love this track), Jamal and last but not least - one of my all time and absolute and ever deep burnin favourites -
"8 steps to perfection" by Company Flow (before their time aswell) including the Instrumental produced by El-P (founder of Definitive Jux).

Moreover i wanted to stay in the present time with a "Hip Hop after 2000" excursion from Zion I to Suff Daddy, Byron & Onra, Dal Green (french dopeness, check his album), Milez Benjiman to Danny Breaks. I hope you enjoy what you hear. you know i'm no battle-dj-scratch-kid, although i would love to be sometimes. i just want to make it a little journey into sound for you out there - diggin that sound!

peace from the lens. I will work on a cover soon, but i just didn't want to wait because of that. find a tracklisting here, download the mixtape there.

last week i somehow stumbled over Real J Wallace's profile on myspace and downloaded his free "A New Day EP". A piece of concious Hip Hip in which he's sharing his thoughts about relationship, breaking up and things like that.

He's part of a crew called "The Mighty Few" and comes from San Diego - California. Nice vibe, nice tunes, nice lyrics. Me personally - I prefer the tracks "away from you", "the break up song", "be free" and "a bit better feat. Bam of the Mighty Few". a dope soulful banger a là ...!

... and spinnin' i want to introduce you to another outstanding and (for me) until now unknown artist straight outta L.A's underground hip hop scene. if you like deep heavy and spheric hiphop instrumentals go check on "Kegs One". I would like to point out two former releases. His "as fate would have it EP" (2009) with Jeff Jabz on red vinyl and his "the harsh reality EP" (2008) on green vinyl (limited to 225 copies coming with a dvd and tshirt). also check discogs for his releases!

have fun, buy records and support artists. they're not living from hand to mouth. peace - da lens.

One.

Before we're heading right into the weekend, I want to inform you about a new free mixtape/album download straying around on the holy www. It's kinda hard these days with stuff labeled "for free" because lots of music you can get a hold of like this isn't even worth the disk space - apart from a few gems in between, which can be quite hard to pick out.

This is one of these gems in my opinion, an album preview of Return of the New which is due to be released this Summer, mixed by DJ Itch13 and hosted by Othello. It's the (well kinda) debut release of Chicago based crew 1773 (Seventeen Seventy-Three) which was formed in 2004, consisting of members Wisdm O.N.E., Just J and Moral One featuring great underground trueschool music with production by Ohmega Watts (check out the lead single It's On Again here!), Othello and many more. Nuff said about this one, head over to the 1773 Blog to get it and enjoy your weekend. Peace.

Some of you might have been there this weekend, Lens mentioned it in an earlier post: Into The City / Asian Village as part of the Wiener Festwochen going from 8th of may til 14th of June.

Here are some of my personal impressions:

I started my little tour on Saturday, May 23rd with a delicious snack from one of the street kitchens hosted by the Thai and Indonesian embassies at Gumpendorfer Straße in the 6th district (which was the center of asian village and closed down for automobiles the whole weekend).
At about 7pm I went to Semper Depot to see/hear a sound/dance performance by Singapur artists sonicbrat (sound), Lim Chin Huat (Motion) and Lim Woan Wen (Light). The show, which lasted about an hour featured a dark light setting with multichannel sound art / piano improvisations and a dance performance. The combination of the three worked quite well in my opinion, although I'm not much of a fan of lenghty and dreamy piano variations. That aside the performance was a success, especially the middle part, where resonances of space were fathomed out, and the ending with its unique lighting, almost turning the poles of semper depot into some kind of dark forest.
After that we went out on the street again to hear a performance by Stereotyp, Cee and AraByrd from Malaysia which was a defintive banger and got the street crowd moving pretty intense. Ranging from Dubstep to Techno to HipHop, Stereo and Cee broke genre borders once again and AraByrd found an answer to every one of their tracks.

Now to my sunday highlight which started at noon, also at Semper Depot. Some of you might have seen Daito Manabes YouTube videos already, yesterday he held a 20 minute performance with a colleague which was quite impressive to see live be honest. Called "Face Visualizer, Instrument and Copy" they hooked themselves up to electrodes which stimulate their facial muscles according to the sounds played. Here's my own short documentation, taken from the middle of the show (Daito is the guy on the right):

That's all from my side, after the performance I went out to enjoy a wonderfully sunny Vienna City sunday. Lens J. might hit you up with a more precise update this week. Stay tuned!

Many of you might remember an album called The Grey Album by producer Dangermouse that came out a couple of years ago, many of you might remember the hard time it had, many might remember "Grey Tuesday" and the aftermath. Now, five years later, once again Dangermouse is held from releasing his OWN album by record label major EMI due to what they call "legal issues". Therefore, for the sake of protest, the album called Dark Night of the Soul is now released as a 100+ page book with artwork by David Lynch and a blank CD-R to be filled with mp3's downloaded via p2p networks. Here's the official statement taken from the release site, www.dnots.com

Danger Mouse's new project Dark Night Of The Soul consists of an album length piece of music by Danger Mouse, Sparklehorse and a host of guest vocalists, along with a collection of original David Lynch photography inspired by and based on the music.

The photographs, which provide a visual narrative for the music, are compiled in a limited edition, hand numbered 100+ page book which will now come with a blank, recordable CD-R. All copies will be clearly labeled: 'For Legal Reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will.'

Due to an ongoing dispute with EMI, Danger Mouse is unable to release the recorded music for Dark Night Of The Soul without fear of being sued by EMI.

Danger Mouse remains hugely proud of Dark Night Of The Soul and hopes that people lucky enough to hear the music, by whatever means, are as excited by it as he is.

By the way, there already is a possibility to listen to the album, head over here to listen to the stream.
