Leaning on a very nice project by photographer Richard Nicholson in which he is documenting some of the last remaining photographic darkrooms in London and a post by the Guardian that has been published under the headline of “the dying art of the photographic darkroom" and that featured this project, I tried to leave you some personal thoughts, that has been haunting me for a while.

Even more since I read an interesting manuscript called “Rauchzeichen aus dem Labyrinth, Der onthologische Anspruch der Photographie” by Steffen Kammler last year (N°6 in the series published as the “Rostocker Phänomenologische Manuskripte”).

Bringing what i read in the manuscript together with what i saw in Richard Nicholsons project and what I experience of being a photographer that still partly processes in the darkroom, i am wondering …  “What esle is going to be gone if the photographic darkroom really dies out? Where (if there) is this thin border between photography in the broader and photography in the narrower sense? The border, that after Steffen Kammler and in conjunction with the darkroom would have to be drawn behind “the negative that has been the last instance that has direct contact with the light and therefore carries the trace of the referent”? Something that digital photography can not claim for itself as “the lightsensor that literally takes the place of the photosensitive layer, in comparison does not show any trace of contact after the contact with the light …” because “the location of the light-contact is seperated from the location where the information is stored.” (Steffen Kammler, Rauchzeichen …, page 28).

I’m not a philosopher and I know that in the end it might not really matter for the (average) spectator. But still I do - as an artist - confront myself with the media I’m working with. As I had to deal with some slight problems after Kodak lately decided to stop production of a certain paper I partly used over the last 9 years of printing - and loved, I had to think about that question of the media even more and had to involuntarily compare those two (very different) crafts from an at least process oriented point of view:

“The craft and process of taking a negative, filterting colors and getting a result by printing in the darkroom” VS “the craft of ... Read more ...

Dear Rotaug Fam, as we are finally back online i take the liberty to introduce you to a release i was mentioning and looking forward to for a couple of months already.

The "Perfect Picture" 2LP by Lex de Kalhex. Released on Kalhex's own label Akromégalie Records. After nerding on hip hop, art and music over the net for quite some time I had the pleasure to meet Alex in Paris last december. Sitting in some fastfood restaurant (it was the only place where we could stay longer without someone blaming us for not consuming more) I had the chance to listen to the whole album and some other upcoming projects ... and I loved each and every track i heard.

Basically you can expect a very well selected and from beginning to end elaborated jazz based, boom bapish Hip Hop album in a mid 90ties Godfather Don, Kev Brown, Grap Luva or Pete Rock tradition. Great beats combined with very well selected and compared to Damu the Fudgemunk's "Supply for Demand" rather unknown samples. This is one of those releases none of you out there, that diggs Hip Hop should ever miss. And on top it comes in a very limited edition of 300 - as far as i know.

Also make sure you check Kalhex debut LP "Kalhex" from 2009. An underground French Rap diamond from Paris. Great beats, great conscious lyrics ... just great! And i don't say this cause i consider Alex a friend and part of my extended fam. i mean it! Peace and WATCH OUT! COMING VERY SOON!

First things first:

ONE

As some of you might have already noticed before, our beloved Morisson Club is still closed due to renewal and construction. That's why our triple-birthday-extravaganza a.k.a. MashMash! V11 is going down at Xpedit Lager in the 1st Wiener Gemeindebezirk. more...

TWO

This one has been around for quite a while now, and now that we got a load of webspace to waste, I figure it's the right time for it to see the light of day: I'm talking about our next featured mix (#03 I believe it is) by DJ HNZN, who has helped us out a lot of times technically and sound-support-wise. It's called oimsee 2k10 - a quite long and very eclectic kinda mix with all sorts of genres being mashed together, just the way we would get down ourselves! Get it here:

THREE

Last but not least, another little goodie I recently came across and wanted to share but couldn't, due to our server failure. It is a mini-documentary of a very innovative label, to say the least, that was founded by Peanutbutter Wolf back in '96 and brought you gems like Lootpack, Charizma, Medaphoar, Yesterday's New Quintet and many more. It is also the label that recently made some solid commercial success with Aloe Blacc's "Good Things". Needless to say, I'm talking about Stones Throw which is covered in this short. The movie was made by Sébastien Bauer & Lucas Blaya and I personally hope that this will turn out to become a full-length any time soon.

Finally we are back online again on a fresh new server and all systems running smoothly.

So be prepared for new exciting content, mixes and features in the next weeks and months to come!

Here is a quick overview what happend:

One hard disk in our old server died after 3 years of reliable service. As we had the data mirrored in a Raid setup, we first thought that it wouldn't be much of a hassle to recover all the files from the still functional second disc. But it is never as easy as it should be. After lots of experimenting and transferring huge amounts of data from Vienna to Berlin (where I'm located) we were able to recover all our files. Big props go to Linux wizard Dima. Without him we wouldn't have made it. We owe you big time!

We then rented and setup a new server and started uploading our files which took a couple of days.

I hope everthing works as before. If you notice any errors or bugs please let me know.

As our beloved Morisson Club was raided by the viennese Magistrat last weekend (yes, the infamous MA2412 shut them down, because their forgotten christmas decoration blocked the emergency exit and their christmas trees have not been recycled correctly...), they have to do some structural measures.

That´s why Mash Mash! V10 (January 29, 22:00) will go down at the

Morisson Exil at Volksgarten Pavillon, 1010 Wien!

Line up stays the same, namely D.Schaerf (Beatbureau), Mista Wisdom aka Worst Messiah (Blue Flowers), Exidas (rotaug.com), Thaiman (rotaug.com/SK Invitational), Clrcdd & Gandl (rotaug.com).

See you all there!

Brand new joint from one of my most favourite Indie HipHop Groups called "Global Platoon" from Baltimore (Sparrow The Movement, Constant Deviants, Rome affiliated). First off their new joint "Mighty Global" feat. M.I, Steve Colossal and Rome - a beautiful melancholic-apocalyptic crate with three great features over a deep, nice and catchy instrumental based on a "The Sylvers" sample. "Who cares what i say, it's the media wordplay."

After that my - also due to the lyrics - so far personal "Global Platoon" fav "Crew Family" that you might know from one of my mixtapes anyway. But in consideration of the fact, that several years are in between those releases i wanted to post both to show the difference ... "I do for you, you do for me; we do for we - crew family" - seems like the crew stuck together or found back together again - i don't know - but they're bringing some news and archived material aswell and i'm diggin it!

Check six2six records for more if you get hooked too ...!
