Rotaug Blog

i can say it was a great long weekend we (dj kompact, me, our better halves and a bunch of friends) spent in zagreb, the "cab club" and the big brother house you could call "la cage aux folles". zagreb, a mixture of graz and istanbul as - i would say - came up with some great hospitality from beko's and william's side (big thank you for that!!!! on this side), amazing sea food at "korcula restaurant" (if u ever go there try the best sepia-risotto you ever had), the best fast food cevapcici i have ever eaten and "last but definitelly not least" a blazin party with a lot of bottles of "medica" (rakia with honey you can get in hundreds of variations), really nice people in an underground cellar location that was built during tito's leadership and not changed over the last 30!!! years and a guy on the bar (the owner of cab club), who's sitting there for already 30 years, typing the amount he charges for a drink in a calculator to tell you after. he got fast over the years, believe me!

getting to know some really nice and intersting new people, phat phillie from blackout entertainment among them, we enjoyed our stay, made people dance and went to bed "drunk as a skunk". some of us a little bit earlier, some a little bit later. "beko". william. and all of you that joined us. thanx for the weekend and a load of new experiences. it was great and zagreb, we will come back!

some things you should check out: cab club, b-side for dancers, william collins, restaurant korcula (teslina 17), beko's smart shop and his tshirts (ilica 37), radio101, blackouthiphop.com/tv and a nice big daddy kane documentary, zagreb and the hatmaker at the opposite of the big brother house ...

Release Tour Flyer

It's been quiet around here, but don't let this fool ya, since there's been a lot going on these days:

We're not only heading into 2009 at full throttle, as you could learn from the previous post and the visual changes, but we're currently also at the final stage of finishing up our first major Sonido Ojo Rojo vinyl release that goes by the name of Return of July / Blessed feat. Rider Shafique & Caroline Scott, produced by DJ Kompact. If you're interested, or you want to preorder, don't hesitate to visit the release page...

No proper release without a proper celebration, so here's an update on the corresponding events preceding the street date of January 30th 2009:

There will be an infamous Message Party this weekend hosted by DJ CUT-EX and DJ KOMPACT, checkout the event page here to learn more...

The week after this one is packed with dates concerning the release, all of the events will be featuring Rider Shafique from the UK.
Starting off on Thursday, Jan 15, DJ Kompact and Rider Shafique will be presenting their single live @ FM4 Tribe Vibes. more...
The Day after that, the official little release tour will start, Friday Jan 16th @ Salon Leopold, more...

untitled_in_case_no_05_2 (their past is our future) by lens (kemoka sound version) is goin to be screened at Film:riss Student Film Festival Salzburg November 12th at 7:30 pm (panorama - category "docu") ... for more information please go to the festival website filmriss.at, the festival lasts from 10th to 15th of november. see you there.

"the fact that i was out there in this special night was determining the whole athmosphere of the sound. i didn't think a minute about how the feeling should be. it had to bee windy, mysterious and very dark. so i performed a jazzballad and cutted it into little pieces, like the pictures in the movie. a few windy sounds and some weird, cutted beats later my soundversion for untitled_in_case_no_05 was born." EROBIQUE LIVE @ TINGEL TANGEL
ELEVATE FESTIVAL GRAZ

... a lot, so this post is supposed to sum it all up. let's take it from the top:

Tuesday Nov 4 '08 (= Today!) Kompact will be spinning records alongside Francoforte at Café Leopold, Vienna. more...

Friday Nov 7 '08 fresh out the box Rotaug member Simonaggio will be hosting EROBIQUE LIVE (International Pony) together with Bernhard Tobola at Brut, Vienna.

Saturday Nov 8 '08 Lens G. Jadepfahl will be teaming up with the First Lady of Bad Taste to blend genres into eternity at Rote Bar Volkstheater, Vienna. more...

Nov 5 - Nov 9 '08 - this is a Rotaug recommendation for all of those interested in styles off the beaten track. They should join the ELEVATE festival in Graz this week - lots of concerts, live-performances, discussions and the like. My personal recommendation would be this Thursday: DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid a.k.a. Paul D. Miller discussing "Commons of the Mind", starting at 19:30 @ Dom im Berg with a Live Performance right after...

Jason Mundo from Dub Assembly (Dallas/US) is playing @ Rhiz wed. september 10. Grab your flipflops and get ready for a heavy bassline dive into a warm summer night.
Taking the Dubstep sound into stripped down, utterly Dubwise territory, his production totally does the sound justice with pulsating beats to keep you nodding and some killer, speaker shaking basslines (Smallfish.co.uk - London)

1st Berlin Dub festival flyer

On the 5th and 6th of September there there will be the 1st Berlin Dub Festival taking place at the famous YAAM on three dancefloors.

From Roots to Dubstep and beyond...

The line up (text taken from old Irieland Music website):

The Disciples, Russ D & Jonah Dan, are originals on the UK and European reggae and dub scene, working for more than 20 years as musicians, sound operators and producers, always staying true to the conscious roots spirit. In recent years they have been running their own Backyard Movements label, and encouraging the next generation of artists.

Paul St Hilaire, formerly known as Tikiman, is another legend of the dub world, a hugely influential artist in bridging the divide between electronic and reggae music, who continues to be much in demand as a live and recording artist. Known to many as the voice of Berlin’s Rhythm & Sound and Basic Channel, St Hilaire also runs the False Tuned label, committed to what he calls “the Caribbean tradition of handmade, human, spiritual music”. An accomplished musician and producer, St Hilaire is a master of deep, melodic music. Making a very rare appearance in his adopted hometown of Berlin.

Digital Roots Movement are the Berlin-based soundsystem crew Tricky D, Aldubb, Jah Seal, Mr Glue and Supa D, producing future dub, roots, and electronica that would make King Tubby proud...

Jahtari, from Leipzig, are a rising force in the dub world, with several new releases this year and a host of international collaborations. As producers move increasingly from studios to laptops, they are interested, in their own words, of “doing something to dub that hasn’t been done before”. Check their very funny website, where they “explain” digital laptop reggae.

Deadbeat, from Canada, is an artist on the digital interface, producing “impossibly heavy dub laden minimal electronics”, and throwing down killer DJ sets when he’s not developing cutting edge music technology.

Daniel Best is the man behind the Berlin-based Best Seven label, well known for championing soulful reggae and dub music, and introducing several Berlin artists to a worldwide audience through the Best Seven Selections.

Also representing the Berlin scene, veteran selecter and original Dub Club DJ Lu-jah, and from the new Dub Club, selecter Bobby Beebass.
