Wubdise´s Record of the Week:

Cornell Campbell
The Gorgon Dubwise
Jamaican Recordings 2009

“The soulful voice of Cornell Campbell has created so many fine tunes and voice has been sprinkled over countless dub albums that might unknowingly already lie in your collections. As his vast catalogue of Rasta influence, Lovers Rock, cover versions and Dancehall and Gorgon tinged tracks are so intertwined with the whole 1970s Reggae Era…”

Dear Rotaug Fam, as we are finally back online i take the liberty to introduce you to a release i was mentioning and looking forward to for a couple of months already.

The "Perfect Picture" 2LP by Lex de Kalhex. Released on Kalhex's own label Akromégalie Records. After nerding on hip hop, art and music over the net for quite some time I had the pleasure to meet Alex in Paris last december. Sitting in some fastfood restaurant (it was the only place where we could stay longer without someone blaming us for not consuming more) I had the chance to listen to the whole album and some other upcoming projects ... and I loved each and every track i heard.

Basically you can expect a very well selected and from beginning to end elaborated jazz based, boom bapish Hip Hop album in a mid 90ties Godfather Don, Kev Brown, Grap Luva or Pete Rock tradition. Great beats combined with very well selected and compared to Damu the Fudgemunk's "Supply for Demand" rather unknown samples. This is one of those releases none of you out there, that diggs Hip Hop should ever miss. And on top it comes in a very limited edition of 300 - as far as i know.

Also make sure you check Kalhex debut LP "Kalhex" from 2009. An underground French Rap diamond from Paris. Great beats, great conscious lyrics ... just great! And i don't say this cause i consider Alex a friend and part of my extended fam. i mean it! Peace and WATCH OUT! COMING VERY SOON!

First things first:

ONE

As some of you might have already noticed before, our beloved Morisson Club is still closed due to renewal and construction. That's why our triple-birthday-extravaganza a.k.a. MashMash! V11 is going down at Xpedit Lager in the 1st Wiener Gemeindebezirk. more...

TWO

This one has been around for quite a while now, and now that we got a load of webspace to waste, I figure it's the right time for it to see the light of day: I'm talking about our next featured mix (#03 I believe it is) by DJ HNZN, who has helped us out a lot of times technically and sound-support-wise. It's called oimsee 2k10 - a quite long and very eclectic kinda mix with all sorts of genres being mashed together, just the way we would get down ourselves! Get it here:

THREE

Last but not least, another little goodie I recently came across and wanted to share but couldn't, due to our server failure. It is a mini-documentary of a very innovative label, to say the least, that was founded by Peanutbutter Wolf back in '96 and brought you gems like Lootpack, Charizma, Medaphoar, Yesterday's New Quintet and many more. It is also the label that recently made some solid commercial success with Aloe Blacc's "Good Things". Needless to say, I'm talking about Stones Throw which is covered in this short. The movie was made by Sébastien Bauer & Lucas Blaya and I personally hope that this will turn out to become a full-length any time soon.

Brand new joint from one of my most favourite Indie HipHop Groups called "Global Platoon" from Baltimore (Sparrow The Movement, Constant Deviants, Rome affiliated). First off their new joint "Mighty Global" feat. M.I, Steve Colossal and Rome - a beautiful melancholic-apocalyptic crate with three great features over a deep, nice and catchy instrumental based on a "The Sylvers" sample. "Who cares what i say, it's the media wordplay."

After that my - also due to the lyrics - so far personal "Global Platoon" fav "Crew Family" that you might know from one of my mixtapes anyway. But in consideration of the fact, that several years are in between those releases i wanted to post both to show the difference ... "I do for you, you do for me; we do for we - crew family" - seems like the crew stuck together or found back together again - i don't know - but they're bringing some news and archived material aswell and i'm diggin it!

Check six2six records for more if you get hooked too ...!

... a.k.a. Brooklyn and wishing everyone a most creative 2011. I almost got lost in the still seemingly endless grounds of surprisingly cheap black gold, but I made it back and took a few gems with me. If you want to join me playing that ish out, go grab your stuff and meet me at Café Leopold tomorrow, Thu Jan 13 around 10 PM to celebrate some of Brooklyn's finest - I'll try to integrate as much of the multitude of artists hailing from the boro in my mix as I possibly can. Here are a few hints to digest until tomorrow:

One Two Three Four

That should get you going, continues are most welcome, not to say mandatory, below...

Glasgow-based "Scotch Bonnet Records" is slowly but surely becoming one of my favourite dub labels. With every single release they step it up another notch and when they join forces with upcoming french singer Pupa Jim it has to be a sureshot.

Release called Tayo meets Acid Rockers ft. PupaJim - “Vampayaa”. This true beauty of a modern steppers tune with remixes by RSD, MARCUS VISIONARY & STARKEY is out on 12inch and digital since late 2010.

This time i would like to introduce you to an upcoming 12inch from Austria by "TAKO" called "NO DOE" (LISTEN).

To keep it short I will concentrate on the instrumentals and one of three vocal tracks called "das lied der zoia feat. selbstlaut & def ill". This song is based on the Martyrdom of Zoya Kosmodemsyanskaya, who was publicly hung by the germans in the village of Petrischevo during the 2nd world war after setting several houses on fire protesting against the occupying force. Before that, they cut one of her breasts and tore her fingernails ... I have listened to that track for several times now and i'm hooked already. By the combination of meaningful lyrics, the deep string and piano based instrumental and of course the samples of an in the 70ties re-recorded "war song from that era" ... digg this!!!
In general i would split this Ep into two parts that show the diversity in Tako's producing: three vocal tracks based on deep instrumentals reminding me of the late 90ties NY era - especially of "Saukrates - Father Time" and seven samplebased and indeed very nice "two to three minute instrumentals skits" that result from tako's heavy diggin for his dopeshit store i suppose ;)

i would personally put it in my bag next to Mr Modo's "Homemade Bun's" or "Dexter's Hi-Hat Club"... My personal favs: "das lied der zoia" and the instrumental skits in general starting with "record hustle", "inderlude", "datum" and "can't trust white people". Nice lyrics by Digga Mindz on "Schnee" too, not to forget about that... available 2011. to be continued! lens j

Hi all, this EP by Olde Soul (L.A.'s Mid City Beats Maestro) has been there for some time already but i'm sure most of you might have missed it. A beautiful collection of beats called "Residue" inna laid back but nodding jazzy tradition - you might know one or two tracks from the Double K (P.u.t.s) & Olde Soul collabo 7inch on my homie Dday One and Simple Sam's Content Label from 2008. however ... digg this free download and enjoy some really nice beatmaking! I'm returning soon with some words on "Lex de Kalhex" and his - he gave me an exclusive listen in Paris last week - hella dope instrumental 2Lp "Perfect Picture" - coming beginning of 2011.
