Rotaug Blog

Yo! Some of you might have already noticed the little picture on the top right - Rotaug's very own CLRCDD and Gandl have just finished the first full-length video of Vertual Vertigo's Sparkies Bungalow LP called Wowzers and it's definitely worth watching. Check it out! Props go out to Mosch @ DuzzDown, Ben & 8Bit @ blncty, Thaiman, ...

If you want an HD version, head over to the project page or watch it at YouTube directly.

And here's another one for 'ya:
In March of 1980 two young rappers from los angeles appeared on the "Chikara Kurahashi Hit Station" variety show in Tokyo. It was the first time rap music had ever been performed in Asia and here is the lost tape of that performance. (text taken from youtube)

But I ain't stopping yet: Since I managed to experience two wicked audio-visual performances at Jazz Café London last night by Cheeba (Solid Steel) and Peanut Butter Wolf (Stones Throw) right after, both doing their Serato-Video thing (although PBW played 2 1/2 h straight with only one turntable due to technical *cough*serato*cough* difficulties), I thought I'd share these with you as well, although most of you will know them already since back in the days - anyways, brings back some good memories.

Today @ 12:25h viennas academy of fine arts was occupied by by students and lecturers. The strike will last until thursday oct. 21st.

The reason for the protest is the adaptation of the us bachelor / master degree system(see the bologna process), In the opinion of many students and lecturers, this system encourages equation in the sense of standardization which leeds to unnecessary competition among educational institutions on a global scale.

Further the so called "automation" of the education system demands an adaptation of neo-liberal economic ideas and profit oriented thinking which often conflicts with the logic and philosophy of artistis. Many Academies and Universities are concerned about the new degree system, because they see their established and legitimate democratic rights replaced with a top-down-hierachy.(roughly translated and shortened from the german press-text)

As you might have noticed already, Sonido Ojo Rojo stands for quality tunes but is far from being a major with a 500+ people staff. Handmade quality takes time, that's why we want to apologize for any delays and give you a little update of what's going on right now:
SOR004 DJ Kompact - Illuminate 7" is in its final stages of production and we've updated the Releases page accordingly so you can prelisten to the tracks. Pre-ordering is open now via email or later this month via hhv.de or juno.co.uk.

Stay tuned for this one!

Now to something different: Most of you might already know it, it's one of my personal favorite mixes named Blunted in the Bomb Shelter by Madlib. It's a  truly blunted mix of 45 Trojan releases and available to download for free now. Get the whole story behind this gem and the files at the Rappcats Blog.

Peace.

Long time no project I thought and got to renewing stuff you might already know and adding things you most definitely don't....

As you can see in the column above, I posted a project from 2008 called "Mode X", which is a 50 minute video installation playing with the concept of ripping the meaning from retro video games. Check it out here...

Also, I've finally updated the documentation of my 2007 gem "Yeah, Yeah, The Birds", an audio installation dealing with feedback and reflection in architectural space. Check it out here...

Last but not least, I've completed part of my photo series "This Is Tunnel Vision!", which, as the name already suggests deals with tunnel architecture and its decontextualisation. Part 2 here and Part 3 here...

Enjoy!

And don't forget to head out to Florido Independent Beach Today and Tomorrow for some action featuring Mr. Wisdom, Sweet Susie, Cut-ex, Lens J. and so forth....

As you might have noticed, Sonido Ojo Rojo hasn't been sleeping this year and put out 2 releases already with another one waiting to be dropped in August.

With a growing number of stores, both online and physical, we thought this might be the time to update you about the current situation:

After years of listening to and posting about one of the finest web radios out there: wefunkradio.com, it's finally happened and they put Sonido Ojo Rojo's very first vinyl release "Blessed feat. Rider Shafique & Caroline Scott" in their special Europe tour mix with mad other tracks, definitely worth checking out. Get Show 565 right here!

Thank you Professor Groove and DJ Static for providing us with quality tunes for more than a decade now! We'll keep listening, supporting and spreading the word!

Yeeeah! What a nice welcome to this summer! Starting today, July 17th, 20:00, with Sonido Ojo Rojo's own Lens J. and Exidas kicking it off, there will be a Friday regular the whole summer long until the beginning of September (depending on the weather) at freshly pimped Florido Independent Beach, Neue Donau, Vienna.

Expect your usual quality tunes from SOR members ranging from hiphop to dub to deephouse, a little dubstep and a tiny taste of 8bit and chiptune music, nice atmosphere, cheap drinks, free entry, a sandy beach, and some special guests soon to be announced.

Also, don't forget to join the "official" kickoff on Saturday, August 1st, hosted by our friends from A Journey Into Sound, Hnzn and Perrez, featuring none less than 1020 Funk legend and hiphop don DJ Cut-Ex and other special guest TBA!

For directions please checkout the event posts to your right! Enjoy a fine and hopefully sunny summer in the city!

Peace.

last week the Sonar festival 2009 took place in barcelona. the most obvious trend to observe was that there are much more live performances going on rather than simply djing, so lets summarize. Day 1 featured Tim Exile with a show entitled "we are the robots", where the musician was accompanied by an essemble of 4 robotic instruments.(video) later that day we watched french experimental hiphop producer Debruit who is also worth mentioning for his fine cut-up sound.

the second day got interesting when viennas Dorian Concept rocked the stage and got wobbly with Bombsquad (listern here) who in my opinion played the best dubstep-set at sonar... and it got really interesting when Ryoichi Kurokawa (video) performed an eclectic audio/visual show using four laptops.

the third and last day was one of the electronic performers. The Raster Noton showcase, featuring SND, Byetone, Atom™ and especially Alva Noto, who performed using a gigantic audiovisual live patch(max msp or homebrew i guess), was nothing less than cutting edge (video1-interface / video2). Furthermore you should check the sound of Lukid, who kept the dub-heads knodding in the dome.

At night the Animal Collective turned the stage into a big playground and brought psychedelic overkill. Followed by Beardyman (video), whose very unique way of performing is worth watching. Props also to Sinden form the UK for bringing some oldskool jungle to the sonar night.
