Rotaug Blog

Last week i stumbled over a very nice photographic book at Vienna's number one art bookstore Lia Wolf.

"The last days of Shishmaref" by Dana Lixenberg published by Episode Publishers and Paradox in 2008. The work tells the story of a village on a small island off the coast of Alaska, that is getting swallowed by the sea. Due to climate changes the permafrost layer is melting, leaving the sea little restraint from reclaiming what is left. The book portraits the people aswell as their surroundings and for example also examines the dangers involved with relocating the inhabitants (animal hunters since generations) in the next bigger city of Kotzebue 100 miles away with it's liquor stores and gambling halls (in textform). A complex portrait of a community balancing between a past rooted in tradition and an uncertain future. The design of the book by Mevis & Van Deursen from Amsterdam is very beautifully succeeded. Very nice 4x5 inch photography (portrait aswell as village tableaux and landscapes), altering groupings of photos and text with different choices of paper grades and colors make it a very well done and (concerning presentation of photographic works in books) inspiring package. Me personally: i would go with the paper grades but leave the colors. Still: I love it!

Plus! The topic of "disappearing" is one of my favourites too as you can see in my last big and still ongoing work "La disparition - le mur d'Atlantique autour de Cap Ferret". This might be one reason why i like this book so much. Props over here!

As you might have noticed already, Sonido Ojo Rojo stands for quality tunes but is far from being a major with a 500+ people staff. Handmade quality takes time, that's why we want to apologize for any delays and give you a little update of what's going on right now:
SOR004 DJ Kompact - Illuminate 7" is in its final stages of production and we've updated the Releases page accordingly so you can prelisten to the tracks. Pre-ordering is open now via email or later this month via hhv.de or juno.co.uk.

Stay tuned for this one!

Now to something different: Most of you might already know it, it's one of my personal favorite mixes named Blunted in the Bomb Shelter by Madlib. It's a  truly blunted mix of 45 Trojan releases and available to download for free now. Get the whole story behind this gem and the files at the Rappcats Blog.

Peace.

I can't f'in' believe this! Well, it honestly caught me by surprise now: With their last album, FUN DMC, being one of my personal favorites from '08, People Under The Stairs, after their short stopover at Tres Records and GoldDust, are back at OM records (that's where it all started back in '98) with their 7th album called Carried Away due to be released on October 13th already! The speed at which the two have been consistently putting out quality releases over the last few years is just unbelievable and I don't even have to prelisten to this one to know it will rock hard. It might just be a good idea to be prepared for some new styles. The official press release states that the album will be a mix of "1 part(y) Beastie Boys / 1 part Public Enemy and 1 part Radiohead", Thes One himself just says: "... some people who have heard it are saying candidate for one of the best puts albums... or so i hear." I just say: Anticipation!

Still supporting the vinyl lovers out there, this album comes as a special double LP pressing with a pimped up die-cut (the holes you can see in the pic are cut out, much like Hocus Pocus' Place 54 vinyl release...) laminate gatefold cover, a poster and boardgame and two full length bonus tracks. If you preorder via HHV.de you even get a T-shirt to go with it.

Plus: Watch out for another World Tour coming your way, dates will follow...

Thank you Thes One and Double K for making my day... again!

...that's why I don't want to keep this gem from you:

Kid Koala is back with a new project called The Slew, which features 6 turntables, DJ P-Love and Kid Koala himself. There will be a tour in the U.S. and an accompanying album that goes by the name of 100% which is available for free download. It's rockin' from what I've heard up until now! Kid Koala sez: "Music is meant to be heard..." I concur. Nuff said. Get it here and pass it on.

This release will also come out on CD and 2xLP for those who really dig it and there's even a fresh video out called It's all over, check it:

for all you HipHopHeads out there and anybody else: interview with YZ, who is responsible for the 80's classic "thinking of a master plan" and the discovery of mos def. he's talking about the inspiration he had back in the days and how he's coping with the fact, that he is legally deaf. also check his "comin at ya live" interviews and find out about artists like "HISD". The Future looks bright my friends ... download their "summer sessions mixtape" for free on their peaceuvmine.com website and digg it! And if you have never seen "it's all gone pete tong" before. watch it. same topic, different approach. protect your ears!

i can say it was a great long weekend we (dj kompact, me, our better halves and a bunch of friends) spent in zagreb, the "cab club" and the big brother house you could call "la cage aux folles". zagreb, a mixture of graz and istanbul as - i would say - came up with some great hospitality from beko's and william's side (big thank you for that!!!! on this side), amazing sea food at "korcula restaurant" (if u ever go there try the best sepia-risotto you ever had), the best fast food cevapcici i have ever eaten and "last but definitelly not least" a blazin party with a lot of bottles of "medica" (rakia with honey you can get in hundreds of variations), really nice people in an underground cellar location that was built during tito's leadership and not changed over the last 30!!! years and a guy on the bar (the owner of cab club), who's sitting there for already 30 years, typing the amount he charges for a drink in a calculator to tell you after. he got fast over the years, believe me!

getting to know some really nice and intersting new people, phat phillie from blackout entertainment among them, we enjoyed our stay, made people dance and went to bed "drunk as a skunk". some of us a little bit earlier, some a little bit later. "beko". william. and all of you that joined us. thanx for the weekend and a load of new experiences. it was great and zagreb, we will come back!

some things you should check out: cab club, b-side for dancers, william collins, restaurant korcula (teslina 17), beko's smart shop and his tshirts (ilica 37), radio101, blackouthiphop.com/tv and a nice big daddy kane documentary, zagreb and the hatmaker at the opposite of the big brother house ...

Today the Music World mourns the passing of Reggae-Legend
Alton Ellis, who died last night after a long struggle against the
effects of lymphatic cancer. His talent and influence was immense
and his loss will be felt by all who ever had the pleasure of his
company. A kind and modest man, he always had time for his
family, friends and fans, and his loss is more than a terrible blow
not only to jamaican music, but to the world at large!

Rest in Peace, Big Man!

Councils are recruiting 'citizen snoopers' to report litter louts, dog foulers and even people who fail to sort out their rubbish properly. The 'environment volunteers' will also be responsible for encouraging neighbours to cut down on waste. The move comes as local authorities dish out £100 fines to householders who leave out too much rubbish or fail to follow recycling rules.
