MASH MASH V13 - APRIL 2010
THE FRENCH INVASION Pt. 1

Edition 13. Mash Mash again and again. This time we proud to welcome french champion sound BHALE BACCE CREW. Playin Dancehall Reggae and Hip Hop inna classic soundsystem style, their selectahs boxes are filled with big 45s in all shades of reggae (early reggae, roots reggae, dancehall, digital, bare roots, stepper ...) and heavy dubplates from the big names in jamaican music business. But the microphone live action is really the strength of the collective with none less than 10 (!) MC´s & Singers, all with a different style, and a live saxophon player. Bhale Bacce also released five self-produced albums in the last 10 years, including intelligent, political as well as very personal lyrics combined with on point delivery and flow. Niceness!

Mash Mash Residents DJ KOMPACT´s true skool dopeness & EXIDAS´s mash up madness will do the rest to kill the night once and for all.

Dr. Alimantado
Best dressed chicken in town
Greensleeves

Best Dressed Chicken in Town is the debut album by Jamaican deejay Dr. Alimantado. It was first released in 1978 , and collects many of his self-produced singles from 1972 to 1977, employing the engineering talents of Lee “Scratch” Perry, King Tubby, and Scientist. It was the first album released by Greensleeves Records, and found favour with followers of both reggae and punk rock in the United Kingdom. The album employed several major hits as the basis for the tracks, including Horace Andy’s versions of “Ain’t No Sunshine” (on the title track) and “A Quiet Place” (“Poison Flour” and “I Shall Fear No Evil”), John Holt’s “Ali Baba” (“I Killed the Barber”), and Gregory Isaacs’ “Thief a Man” (on “Gimmie Mi Gun”) and “My Religion” (“Unitone Skank”). A dubwise classic, plus one of the greatest cover artworks in the history of (reggae) music…

King Tubby
I Am The King
Sprint Records

King Tubby at the control. Music, underground or popular, would not be the same today without Osbourne Ruddock experimenting way back. A true originator.

“Born January 28th 1941, Osbourne Ruddock aka King Tubby is known primarily for his influence on the development of dub in the 1960s. In the 1950s, King Tubby’s musical career began with the sound systems, set up on the streets of Kingston and playing dance music for the people. As a radio repairman, Tubby soon became quite helpful at most of the sound systems around..."

instant photographs of the urban space, it's architecture, "function" and mystic. for this one I have chosen to edit and work with an already existing loop-based piece of music composed by rotaug's very own dj kompact while kryot is (as always) reflecting his surroundings. Get it here

Today morning I found a very interesting documentary about rocksteady, reggae, ska icon Dj Derek - a 69 year old Bristol-based DJ (via Burned Shoés dub.reggae.s... group on fb). I think there isn't much more to say than "stop, look & listen", cause all i know about Dj Derek is what i know from this documentary. Crazy actually that I have only known his 9 years younger "weight-class collegue" David Rodigan so far. Enjoy the trip and to all you DJs and DJanes out there :D look into a bright future ... best ever! And check his tour dates to catch him spinning in London, ...
